We have launched the 2022-2023 Curie-osities, the preamble to the school’s 26th Science Fair. The Science Fair committee has selected an outstanding scientist to honor. This year we celebrate a female mathematician and scientist of color in an era where women in the sciences was rare, and where racial segregation still existed. In 1953, Katherine Johnson began working at what was then the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics before it became NASA, when at last segregation was officially banned. Katherine Johnson was part of an elite team of Black women who computed by hand the calculations to put a spacecraft into orbit and launched the first U.S. astronaut into space.
